Types of Lens Materials

CR-39

CR-39/Standard Plastic lens is light weight compared to glass, and may be made in just about any prescription, though many people with higher prescriptions prefer to use a thinner lens . The higher the index, the thinner the lenses. Plastic lenses are great for colored lenses due to their tintability factor and you can virtually tint a plastic lens to any color under the rainbow.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate lenses set the standard in eyewear safety. These lenses are a smart choice for people active in sports, those who work in hazardous job environments, and especially for children.

Mid-Index

Mid and High index materials are classified by numbers. The higher the number, the thinner and lighter the lens. The lower numbers are classified as mid-index lenses. Mid-index lenses are those with numbers such as 1.54, 1.56, and 1.57.

Trivex

This material is the newest in the lens category. It has a mid index, but it is so light that it almost floats on water! It is a great choice for safety for impact resistant eye wear. It is the #1 choice for rimless and semi-rimless eyeglasses as it is one of the strongest lens materials available.

High-Index

The newest type of  plastic lens is designed for people with stronger prescriptions. Vision can be corrected with less material, making the lens much thinner, eliminating that old "Coke bottle" look. High index lenses, such as 1.60, 1.66, 1.67, 1.70, 1.71 and 1.74, are much thinner and more comfortable than regular glass or plastic.
